Officially a Nursing Student

Well, when today is over, I will have completed my first week of nursing school.  It's not as bad as I expected.  It's tough. No doubt about that.  There's lots of material, everything moves fast &, as we've been reminded a million times, it all requires lots of critical thinking.

I began developing a sore throat Monday evening & have proceeded to only get sicker as the week has progressed. Today, I feel like crap & will be really glad when 11:30am gets here & I can head home.  I have a ton of homework to get done (including something like 140 abbreviations to have memorized by Mon. for a quiz which we must pass with a 100%!).  I'm working really hard to just stay focused and take it all one day & one week at a time.

As a kind of side note, Chemistry is actually pretty interesting (even it is my first chem class in over 15 years! EEK!) and my A&P teacher reminds me of my great Aunt Sandra.  She's very nice & really helps to make the material easier to remember.

Lots of changes have been taking place in our house. For one, I have to get out of my PJs before 6am everyday Mon-Fri.  In fact, on Fri., I have to be on campus (an hr. drive from home - one way) by 7am.  For some of you that might not be a big deal, but it's been YEARS since I had to get up this early so it's taking some adjusting to for me. Toby has to get up & get Liv ready for school now.  That's a huge change for the both of them.  I am happy to say that, not only are they managing nicely, but I don't think Sheena has had to come across the yard & separate them yet either - haha!  Honestly, they are doing really well together. Toby's even learned the art of hair straightening. :) Thank goodness, because I doubt my stress level could handle any more. Best of all, Toby seems to have found his inner Mr. Mom.  He's been helping around the house with laundry, getting meals ready, getting Liv to finish her homework, etc.  There are really no words for how much I appreciate all his help & support.  I could never do this without him.

It's nearly time to head in & start my day; I'm sure I should be studying so I better close this out.

Random Ramblings

I should have just named my whole blog "Random Ramblings" haha! I'll tell ya, right now randomness is all that bounces around in this skull of mine.  Anyone seen the movie "Up"?  Most days I feel like Dug....

If you haven't seen this movie, I highly recommend it.  If you know me, you already know that I LOVE old people...oh, sorry, I think I should really say, "I love the elderly" or something much more politically correct.  But the fact of the matter is, I LOVE old people.  They have so many neat experiences to share, so much wisdom tucked away in their minds.  I just think they are special people & I love being around them.  Having said that, if you watch the movie, you'll understand not only why I loved it, but also why I cried at the end.

Anyway, back to the random ramblings of today...

* Monday is my nursing school orientation.  I am super excited about that.  I'm anxious to get going & see what it's all going to be like. I've heard absolute horror stories about nursing school, but the unknown is usually always scarier than reality.  Then just 1 week until the torturous 5 day a week drive to Jasper begins....that I'm not looking forward too.

* My FIL will be starting chemo/radiation treatments in Sept.  Please pray for him & for my MIL.  Being a public blog, I don't want to share all the details on here, but I will say that the next 6 months are going to be very difficult for him and for her as well.  We often forget the caregiver, but their job is very challenging & very demanding.  To know my FIL is to love him.  He is the kind of man most men only aspire to be & he faces life with an attitude that most of us can only wish we had. We know that God has a plan & we know that my FIL's care is in hands much bigger & much more powerful than any human hands could ever be.  Still, WE are human & we still have human emotions & unanswered questions.  We believe in the power of prayer & we are grateful for all the prayers that have been sent up already & for those of you who continue to pray for them.

* On a much lighter & completely different note, has anyone else noticed the leaves on the trees starting to turn? We are suppose to go to TN in Oct. I was REALLY looking forward to seeing the mountains in full color (something I've never seen before).  If they start turning now though I'm thinking they may be past peak color by the time we get there.  That would stink (to miss out on the fall colors) BUT I wouldn't complain if fall came early here.  These temperatures are just too much for me.  I'm over the heat & humidity.

* Liv went back to school Tues. She's doing OK.  6th grade is proving to be a little bit of an adjustment for her. Here, the 6th grade is still in with the elementary school but their goal is to help the students be ready for the 7th grade so there are lots of changes that the kids are having to deal with. The biggest thing is that they are being given a lot more freedom to organize themselves as they see fit.  Although I understand why in previous years they force them to organize a specific way, I think it is important that students learn to organize themselves in a manner that works for them.  Liv is enjoying that freedom but it's taken her a few days to get use to not being told how to organize every little aspect of her day.

Well, enough randomness for today. Have a great Friday the 13th!!!

Cheap Mom Alert!!

A BIG "Thank You" to Money Saving Mom for the link to a great coupon! (If you haven't subscribed to her email updates, you're missing out :).  Her email updates usually have lots of $$$ saving tips!)

Anyway, back to the coupon, she recently posted the following:

Post-It Notes Coupon

I LOVE Post-It Notes, but being a frugal mom, I can never bring myself to pay such a high price for a small piece of paper with some sticky on it just to write a quick note on & toss in the trash.

HOWEVER, Walmart (& I believe Target too) is currently offering single pad packages of Post-It Super Sticky Notes for $1.  This $1 off coupon can be printed multiple times & used to get your household some Post-Its for my absolutely favorite price: FREE!!! And just in time for back-to-school too!! The cashier at Walmart today had no problems with me using 6 coupons on 6 packages in one transaction.  If you have a picky cashier, you may have to ring them up as separate transactions.

"Dogs have given us their absolute all. We are the center of their universe. We are the focus of their love and faith and trust. They serve us in return for scraps. It is without a doubt the best deal man has ever made." ~Roger Caras

It's gonna be another hot one here today...man oh man will I be glad when fall & cooler weather gets here. I'm glad to be able to sit in the AC & not have to be outside.

My Buddy :)
Yesterday our little doggie hopped up on Toby's lap & he realized she had a fairly large mass on the flap of her ear.  It hadn't been there the day before, but it was certainly there now.  I called our vet's office & they said to bring her that afternoon.  We did and the vet said she has an aural hematoma & would need surgery.  She ended up getting left at the vet for the night so he could do the surgery today.

I called a little while ago & he hadn't performed the procedure yet, but she should be ready to come home later this afternoon.  Bet she'll be mad at us!  I sure do miss her.  With Liv heading to school today I sure could've used her companionship.  Can't blame her though, 'cause I bet she was wishing she was with me too!

Sunday Randomness

Some random thoughts for today:

* My mind is heavy with thoughts of how & when my "baby" got big enough to be going into the 6th grade. Tuesday is the 1st day of the 6th grade for her & while she may be ready, it may not be just the mother's of the Kindergarteners that are sad that morning....just sayin'

* The closer it gets to Aug. 23rd the more excited I am getting for my classes to start.  I still need to buy some of my supplies & try to figure out my computer situation, but other than that I am ready to get this ball a rollin'!

* I'm really looking forward to visiting TN in a few months.  This summer has been long, hot & challenging & it is going to be nice to have a mid-term break before gearing up for the rest of my 1st semester & the holidays.

* I am more than ready for fall & cooler temps.  This summer has been miserable!  I'm also ready for electric bills that have no AC cost on them...

* I know Liv was specifically picked for me, so why am I always amazed when she does or says something that is exactly what I need at the time?  She has a knack for knowing when I'm down or need to vent & she has a special way of getting me to talk about it or of saying things that make me feel better.  I sure am glad I have her.  She is such a blessing. Anyone who chooses not to know her is surely missing out. (Of course, I could be slightly biased :)

* I'm still loving my homemade laundry soap.  I went ahead & shredded & chopped my Fels Naptha in my food processor.  It worked great, but my food processor died this past week. I'm not convinced that there is a correlation between the 2.  After all, my food processor has been making salsa at least once a week for quite some time & also survived moving twice.  It was only made of plastic so I guess it had to go at some point.  A new one is definitely going to be a must when I head to the grocery next week.

* I have recently became a fan of Plato's Closet. Not for me (of course), but what a great way to satisfy Liv's clothes addiction for less $$$!!!  We're planning a trip up there later this month to start looking for winter clothes.

* I love this video for reminding me to count my blessings:
